Living in Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is the provincial capital of the north coast, a working Dominican city of about 160,000 people with government offices, hospitals, markets and a historic centre known for its Victorian “gingerbread” architecture.

Most foreign residents do not live in the old town itself but in the communities around it: Playa Dorada, a planned golf and resort community from the late 1970s; Costambar, quieter and residential; and Cofresí, newer and home to Ocean World.

The city has two cruise terminals, Amber Cove and Taino Bay, and Gregorio Luperón International Airport lies about 15 km east of the centre. Landmarks include the cable car up Pico Isabel de Torres, Fortaleza San Felipe and the Amber Museum.

Puerto Plata: frequently asked questions

How far is Puerto Plata from the airport?

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) is about 15 km (9.3 miles) east of Puerto Plata city centre, a drive of roughly 20 to 30 minutes.

Where do expats live around Puerto Plata?

Mostly in the communities around the city rather than in the historic centre: Playa Dorada, Costambar and Cofresí.

Do I need Spanish in Puerto Plata?

More than in Sosúa or Cabarete. Puerto Plata is a working Dominican city, so everyday life there goes more smoothly with at least basic Spanish.
