Living in Sosúa
Sosúa is the most established expat and retiree town on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. It sits on a sheltered bay about ten minutes from Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) and has the widest choice of English-speaking services, clinics and restaurants on this stretch of coast.
The town has three distinct parts. El Batey, east of the main beach, is where most foreign buyers look: condos, restaurants, shops and services within walking distance of the sea. Los Charamicos on the west end is a lively local Dominican neighbourhood, and Sosúa Abajo is an inland residential area.
Playa Sosúa is a crescent of sand about a kilometre long with calm, reef-sheltered water for swimming and snorkelling; quieter Playa Alicia lies right next to it. The bay is one of the north coast’s main diving areas, with around twenty dive sites a few minutes by boat from the beach.
Sosúa also has an unusual history: between 1940 and 1945 several hundred Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria settled here. Their synagogue in El Batey is still active, and the Jewish Museum is being renovated.

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) is about 5 km from Sosúa, a drive of roughly 8 to 10 minutes. Taxis and transfers are available at the airport.
Which part of Sosúa do foreign buyers usually choose?
Most foreign buyers look in El Batey, the district east of the main beach, where condos, restaurants, clinics and shops are within walking distance of Playa Sosúa.
Can I get by in English in Sosúa?
In El Batey English is widely spoken in real estate, hospitality and everyday services. Government offices and banks work in Spanish, so for paperwork you will want basic Spanish or someone who speaks it.
What are the beaches in Sosúa?
The main beach is Playa Sosúa, about a kilometre of sand with calm, reef-sheltered water. Next to it is the quieter Playa Alicia, further along Playa Chiquita, and on the west side of the bay the beach at Los Charamicos.
