For saleLiving in Cabarete
Cabarete is the watersports town of the north coast, about 20 to 25 minutes east of Puerto Plata International Airport. It became known for windsurfing in the 1980s and is today one of the best-known kitesurfing destinations in the Caribbean, with steady trade winds on most days of the year.
Compared with Sosúa, Cabarete is smaller, younger and more active: low-rise, walkable, with a close expat community of watersports enthusiasts and remote workers. Restaurants and bars line the beach in the town centre, and the evenings start when the kites come down.
The beaches are not interchangeable. Cabarete Bay is the town beach and home of the windsurfing scene. Kite Beach, about 2.4 km west, has most of the kite schools; when a listing says “near Kite Beach”, this is the one. Playa Encuentro, about 4.8 km west, is the area’s main surf beach.
Demand in Cabarete centres on furnished condos near Cabarete Beach, Kite Beach and Playa Encuentro, alongside villas in and around town.
Cabarete: frequently asked questions
How far is Cabarete from Puerto Plata airport?
Cabarete is roughly 16 to 20 km from Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), usually an 18 to 25 minute drive.
What is the difference between Cabarete and Sosúa?
Sosúa is the larger, longer-established town with more services and many retirees. Cabarete is smaller and more active, built around kitesurfing, surfing and beach life, with a younger expat and remote-worker community.
When is the best season for kitesurfing in Cabarete?
Trade winds make February through August the most reliable stretch for kiting and windsurfing. Bigger surf at Playa Encuentro usually arrives in winter.
Where is Kite Beach?
Kite Beach is about 2.4 km (1.5 miles) west of Cabarete Bay. It has the most kite schools and a shoreline that makes launching and landing easier for beginners.
